I have been practicing Yoga for over twenty years, mainly the forms of Hatta, Ashtanga and Vinyasa Yoga. Later, I practiced Iyengar Yoga as the style was more suitable and supportive for me. After practicing Iyengar Yoga for a number of years I decided to train as a teacher.
The training course was over a three year period supervised by a Senior Iyengar Teacher. Only when they consider that you ready in practice, knowledge and understanding can you be nominated to be assessed to be a teacher. Three Senior Teachers carry out the assessment,
I am pleased to say that I qualified and allowed to use this symbol.
Iyengar Yoga is a branch of Hatha Yoga, which is the more widely practiced style of yoga. Iyengar Yoga was developed in 1960's by B.K.S. Iyengar.
This form of yoga recognises that not everyone has the ability, agility and flexibility to achieve traditional yoga poses (asana's) and that the use of props can enable more people to achieve the poses required. whilst limiting the risk of injury, stress and strain.
B.K.S. Iyengar is credited with the increased popularity of yoga in India and the western world.
B.K.S. Iyengar died aged 95 and was still teaching and practising his yoga till late in life.
Iyengar Yoga is suitable for all ages, abilities and experience.
It is a controlled yoga with no rapid movements or fast transitions between poses. The teacher corrects where necessary, a student's pose, to ensure correct alignment and posture. Props are used to assist achieving poses, the props take many forms, blankets, bolsters, wooden/cork blocks, chairs, ropes, etc .
The props are provided in the classes.
